As for Dave's commitment to Cerebus- judging from the polish evident in the inking of the pre-Cerebus short stories available in Cerebus Archive #2, it's entirely possible that Cerebus was not Dave's sole focus up till issue 11. Those short stories certainly have interesting textures and (arguably) a better balance of black and white and more attention to line weight than some of the early Cerebus issues. Then again, part of that could be explained from Dave's brief interest in the "dead weight" line of animation. The really crazy tones come up in the next issue, #12 -- I don't think it's a duoshade but it's some kind of chemically-activated thing where you paint onto it where you want the shade to show through. I for one don't mind qualified armchair psychology, of the "is it possible that...?" variety. I'm pretty sure the toning on the cockroach and the backgrounds is a type of crafttint paper, i.e. two distinct tones that could be released/revealed with a certain chemical applied to the paper itself. A particularly hideous version of crafttint paper was used on the early Eastman and Laird TMNT comics. Welcome back!

Just found this diablog. Very interesting. I read some posts and am very intrigued by how this blog will play out. I started reading at issue 40 and went on to collect the entire series except for several issues below #10. Many hours were spent discussing plot points and simian philosophy with friends. Good luck with an ambitious but surely rewarding task! Tony Hi! Just found this diablog. Very interesting. I read some posts and am very intrigued by how this blog will play out.
